Nadi/Bau/Levukia Van boat Taxi and Levukia fun

Here's some pics from KT's new Sony camera.  Sorry they are out of order with respect to the others

The first few are our van and boat taxi ride to our new home

The rest are from KT and some friends spending the day in Levukia.  $60.00 gets use of their water equipment and a nice lunch.

Just where are we exactly?

As Fiji is made up of a huge number of islands, describing where we are is hard.
We landed in Nadi on the largest Fiji island.  Getting to our volunteer site was a 4 hour drive to Suva.  After a short stay another short 30 minute drive to the outskirts of town towards a boat launch called Bau.  From there is was a 45 minute boat ride to an island resort called Leluvia Island Resort.  Google that if you want to see the location.  From there we take a very short boat ride to Caqalai, our home for a month. The yellow arrow on the second image below points to our new home.

Sunday is a day of rest

Many of the volunteers and staff stay behind for rest and relaxation. Duties are still required however the pace is relaxed as the training/education and surveys are not required. We needed it after a really long week.

Relaxing after dinner

Its been a tiring week of boot camp style training and education. Its necessary to get the volunteers up to speed with the education needed to do the proper scientific research. This place has some of the best samples of raw coral life and studying it is necessary for the rest of the worlds sea life

The Islands

Levuka, Moturiki, Caqalai and Leleuvia. We are based on Caqalai.

Regulators. Gotta have them

BCD storage

Our dive shop

All we need for diving

Fuel storage

As the pump and generator run on fuel, we go through a bit of fuel

Our laundromat

Ground water is brackish but good enough for washing clothes. We cannot drink it though

Our fresh water source

Rain water is collected in multiple places. This container includes a filter for our drinking water

Lots going on

Oh man with multiple people for many durations of time, its a real challenge to teach and do science at the same time

EMS training

Lots of training for a few days

Volunteering in Caqalai

This is our home for the next 30 days. We are stationed on Caqalia, a tiny island south of Levuka. We are part of a volunteer group working on a marine conservation project. More pics and info to come.

An evening panorama

Mostly a test to see if this can be posted

KT and friends

Getting some excellent education

There was an earthquake with tsunami warnings recently. Its been downgraded but we are on standby for aftershocks. The boat is pro actively loaded for a possible run to Moturiki for higher ground.

About to go to Moturiki

The local community is a 5 minute boat ride away. It is respectful to GOTO church to meet the community members. Here we are about to go

The resort right beside our destination

The boat ride

The gear

Taxi time

We jammed 9 people and all their gear into this. Onward to the island

Fun night

We had a fun night singing and drinking kava with new friends, both locals and fellow travellers from around the world.

Kava Ceremony

We were spotted as tourists and led to Youth Village Handicraft. It was a sell all the way but done with history and vital local information. We have tried Kava before but this stuff was way better. After turning down a tough sell,  I've promised to return later to arrange shipment of a bowl and 2Kg of Kava root.  Jo Jo here understood.

Look who hitched a ride

This thing drives KT nut's so it's appropriate that it came along for the journey

Last supper in Canada

OMG the last few hours were crazy. Technical problems with the bag printing system led to huge check in delays. People were missing their flights. Manager warned many would be missing flights. Luckily we were noticed and fast tracked through. I hope others are as lucky.

Bye bye Pearson

Our last few hours on Canadian soil.
